Focussing on the plot of this boisterous modernising of the classic 80’s TV show would be missing the point entirely. It has something to do with money-printing plates and there’s a baddie with weird green eyes but the film moves at such a belting pace you’d be lucky to notice even that much. The focus of this big, dumb action film is on the characters and the action. Neither out-shines the other and both are in your face from the get-go. Continue reading
Believe me when I say I love video games. I don’t shrug them off as a lesser entertainment or believe in the redundant stereotypes but my God do they make horrific films. But why are video game movies so damn bad? Some might say it’s the content, some might say it’s that the directors who might be able to do them justice aren’t interest and others might just point at Uwe Boll. Each decade has a certain type of film that it’s remembered for. The eighties had family films like Back to the Future, Ghostbusters and the last two Star Wars films. The nineties had action films like Con Air, The Rock and Goldeneye mixed with Disney classics The Lion King and Toy Story. For the noughties it can only be superhero films. Continue reading
The argument that sequels are terrible, dirty examples of the lack of originality in movie-land is a tricky one. It’s the most obvious way of supporting the argument that there are no ideas in Hollywood but it’s not the best way. Successful films breed sequels, it’s a well-established fact of cinema, but that doesn’t mean the well of ideas has run dry.
There is plenty of originality in sequels. At their best sequels evolve on the original, developing characters and ideas such as with The Empire Strikes Back or Terminator 2. Most other sequels are rehashes of the first films with new characters that give the illusion of progression. At their worst sequels can completely lose touch with what made the original so great, they may even edge towards becoming a parody of themselves like with Oceans Twelve. Continue reading
In Forgetting Sarah Marshall Russell Brand was the surprising highlight in a well-rounded comedy. He was funny as a bit character but that’s all he was, he was the embodiment of the lead’s failures. He was annoying, British but hilarious on occasion. Get Him To The Greek takes that rock and roll character of Aldous Snow and makes him the focal point. That leap from supporting character to star didn’t fill me with much hope, especially from an actor with as little big-time experience as Brand but upon seeing the film I was actually surprised.
